This regional webinar aimed to enhance the shared understanding of the structural and cultural challenges that perpetuate violence against women in the Arab and North Africa region. It showcased successful national models in prevention, protection, and support, while seeking to build a foundation for regional cooperation that contributes to developing more comprehensive and sustainable policies to combat gender-based violence.
The webinar organized by WoMENA, an initiative of the Al Hurriya Liberal Network (AHLN) dedicated to empowering liberal women across the MENA region was an occasion to celebrate the UN Women Campaign “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence,” an annual international civil society-led initiative that begins on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and concludes on 10 December, Human Rights Day. The campaign highlights that violence against women remains the most pervasive breach of human rights worldwide, calling for unified regional and global action to end it.
Different speakers from the region discussed the legal frameworks and public policies adopted in each country and their effectiveness in protection and enforcement; exchanged experiences on psychological, social, and legal support mechanisms for survivors; and developed practical recommendations to enhance regional cooperation in addressing gender-based violence.
